SJM Resorts has become the first organization in Macau to join the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) membership program, marking a significant milestone in both the company’s sustainability journey and the city’s broader efforts to strengthen its position as a responsible tourism destination.
The membership places SJM alongside leading tourism and hospitality organizations worldwide that have committed to advancing sustainable business practices and aligning with internationally recognized sustainability standards.
The development builds on the company’s previous achievements in sustainable hospitality. In 2024, Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau became the first resort in Macau to obtain ISO 20121:2024 certification for its Event Sustainability Management System, reinforcing SJM’s efforts in sustainable tourism and MICE development.
SJM said its sustainability strategy is guided by its CRAFT framework, which integrates environmental, social and governance priorities across the organization. The framework focuses on sustainable hospitality experiences, community engagement, employee development, climate resilience, and responsible corporate governance.
Managing Director Daisy Ho said the company’s commitment to sustainability reflects its long-standing connection with Macau and its vision for the city’s future development. She noted that joining the GSTC represents a natural next step in SJM’s efforts to help elevate sustainability standards across the tourism industry.
Through its GSTC membership, SJM plans to further strengthen sustainability initiatives across its integrated resort portfolio, including Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau and Grand Lisboa Macau. Current efforts include energy efficiency programs, water conservation measures, plastic reduction initiatives, and the promotion of responsible event management practices.
The company believes these initiatives will not only enhance its own operations but also contribute to Macau’s competitiveness as a destination for sustainable tourism, business events, and international conferences, while supporting the city’s long-term environmental and economic development goals.
The GSTC is the global body that develops and manages internationally recognized standards for sustainable travel and tourism, widely used by destinations, hotels, and tourism operators around the world
