The Municipality of Muriaé, through its consumer protection agency (Procon Muriaé) and Secretariat of Human Rights and Citizenship, is hosting a talk on the impact of online betting and rising consumer over-indebtedness.
The initiative comes in partnership with the Minas Gerais Bar Association (OAB/MG). Procon is Brazil's municipal and state consumer protection agency, handling complaints and enforcement under national consumer law, while the OAB is Brazil's national bar association, responsible for regulating the legal profession.
Titled "Bets, Vulnerability and Over-Indebtedness: New Challenges for Consumer Law," the event aims to broaden discussion around the risks tied to betting platforms, consumer vulnerability, and the challenges facing consumer protection in this context. It also aims to clarify the new provisional measure banning the sector in the country.
Speakers include a psychiatrist, a consumer law specialist and the President of the Consumer Law Commission at OAB/MG's Muriaé subsection, who will also serve as a panel discussant.
The talk brings together professionals and interested residents for a session focused on the effects of online betting and over-indebtedness on consumers and families.
Last year, way before the national betting ban, the Manaus City Council approved a similar measure establishing a Municipal Week for Confronting Betting and Games of Chance Addiction, aimed at the rapid rise in gambling-related harm among young people and adults in the Amazonas capital.
More recently, Finance Minister Dario Durigan said the provisional measure banning betting operators halted approximately BR600m ($115m) in daily transactions previously directed to betting platforms, according to Central Bank data.
After the ban, Brazil's National Association of Games and Lotteries ended its agreement with Sportradar covering sports integrity initiatives in Brazil
