The British Horseracing Authority (BHA), with support from the Racing Foundation, has unveiled a new environmental strategy aimed at securing the long-term sustainability of British racing.
The framework sets out four priority areas: cutting greenhouse gas emissions, safeguarding water resources, reducing waste and strengthening biodiversity.
According to the BHA, the strategy seeks not only to reduce the industry's environmental footprint but also to coordinate existing efforts taking place across racing organisations.
The initiative, fully financed by the Racing Foundation, will run for five years.
Its opening phase will concentrate on mapping the sector's environmental impact, including data collection on carbon output and natural resource use, before moving towards implementation and identifying further funding streams.
Katie Carr, BHA Head of Environmental Sustainability, said the health of racing is inseparable from the health of the natural environment, stressing the importance of taking action now.
Racing Foundation CEO Tansy Challis added that the programme will provide an aligned approach, enabling the sport to make a positive contribution to communities and welfare alongside environmental goals.
"The Racing Foundation is proud to support the development of this strategy, which sets a clear direction for how the industry can meaningfully contribute to an environmentally sustainable future," she said.
