The Polish Football Association (PZPN) has opened disciplinary proceedings against five footballers competing at the central league level following allegations that they participated in illegal betting activities, including wagers on matches involving their own teams.
The investigation was initiated after the federation’s Disciplinary Ombudsman concluded that sufficient evidence had been gathered to formally pursue charges.
According to the association, the players are suspected of placing a combined total of 5,422 bets, raising concerns about potential breaches of integrity rules within Polish football.
As part of the ongoing proceedings, the PZPN Disciplinary Committee is reviewing betting activity that may have involved matches played by the accused players’ teams. The federation stated that 69 bookmaker wagers linked to these fixtures are currently under analysis to determine whether there were attempts to influence the course or outcome of matches in connection with betting activity.
While the investigation continues, the association has not publicly disclosed the identities of the players involved, nor the specific clubs or leagues affected.
In two cases, the disciplinary body has imposed a preventive measure that temporarily prohibits the players from participating in both league and cup matches under Article 127 of the PZPN’s disciplinary regulations.
If the players are found guilty, a range of sanctions could be applied. These include financial penalties, temporary bans from football-related activities, suspension or revocation of licences, removal from official roles within the sport and potential exclusion from the national federation.
The case emerges against a backdrop of broader efforts to tackle illegal gambling in Poland. Earlier this year, state lottery operator Totalizator Sportowy signed a Letter of Intent with the national police to strengthen cooperation and analytical capabilities in combating illegal gambling.
Professional football regulations generally prohibit players, coaches and officials from betting on competitions in which they participate to protect the integrity of sporting events
