A bill introduced in the Buenos Aires Provincial Legislature seeks to strengthen controls over online gambling in Argentina’s largest province, as policymakers debate how to curb illegal platforms operating alongside the regulated market.
The initiative was presented by Provincial Deputy Nazarena Mesías and focuses on tightening oversight of digital betting activity, particularly in areas related to advertising and the accessibility of unlicensed platforms. The proposal comes as authorities continue to confront the spread of offshore operators that target players in the province without authorization.
Buenos Aires Province launched its regulated online betting market in 2021 through licenses granted by the Provincial Institute of Lottery and Casinos. The framework created a legal market with multiple operators but enforcement against unauthorized sites has remained a challenge.
Mesías argued that illegal platforms continue to operate in parallel with licensed operators and that existing regulatory tools have proven insufficient to limit their reach.
Nazarena Mesías, Provincial Deputy, said: "We cannot continue looking the other way while illegal online gambling expands without control and increasingly reaches minors."
The bill proposes measures intended to strengthen the province’s capacity to restrict access to unauthorized websites and reduce the visibility of unlicensed operators in digital spaces. It also includes provisions aimed at limiting gambling-related advertising that could reach minors or promote illegal platforms.
Lawmakers backing the initiative say the objective is to reinforce the existing regulatory framework rather than roll back the legal market. Supporters argue that clearer rules and stronger enforcement mechanisms could help protect licensed operators while addressing concerns about consumer protection and youth exposure to gambling.
