Reconstruction work has begun at Casino Tótem in San Martín, Mendoza, despite an ongoing judicial investigation into the fire that destroyed its gaming floor last month.
The blaze, which broke out in March 2026 at the Tótem Boulevard complex, completely gutted the casino area and caused significant damage to adjacent facilities within the mixed-use development.
These facilities included retail spaces, a hotel and a medical center. No fatalities were reported, but they were forced to move due to the harm.
Investigators are currently assessing whether the fire originated from an electrical fault in the facility’s energy system. Authorities have not ruled out negligence, structural failures or potential corporate liability, with further developments expected as forensic analysis continues.
The decision to begin reconstruction before the investigation concludes has drawn scrutiny from local authorities, amid concerns that ongoing work could interfere with the evidentiary process.
While early rebuilding efforts are not uncommon in Latin America as operators seek to limit revenue losses and protect jobs, regulators and courts may impose restrictions if active investigations are deemed at risk.
No timeline has been confirmed for the casino’s reopening. The outcome of the judicial process is expected to determine both the pace of restoration and any liabilities assigned to the operator or property management.
The fire occurred during overnight hours when the casino was operating at reduced capacity, which contributed to a swift evacuation and the absence of injuries
