An Argentinian football club has denied allegations linking a group of its players to sports betting activity, following reports that circulated after a series of suspensions.
Estudiantes de Río Cuarto, from Córdoba Province, said it would pursue legal action against media outlets that published what it described as unfounded claims connecting members of its first-team squad to gambling-related misconduct.
The club confirmed that around 10 players had been suspended after a 2-1 home defeat to Barracas Central on April 12, but stressed that the decision was based solely on internal disciplinary matters agreed between management and the technical secretariat.
In an official statement, the club said: “The institution considers it necessary to publicly clarify that none of the players in the professional squad are linked to sports betting cases,” while also rejecting “erroneous and unfounded” reports shared across media and social platforms.
It added that the measures taken “respond exclusively to a determination reached between management and the Technical Secretariat, after analyzing internal situations that do not align with the values of commitment and sporting objectives this club historically upholds.”
While the club did not disclose the specific reasons behind the suspensions, local reports had suggested a potential link to betting-related activity, prompting the public clarification and legal warning.
The club has been under scrutiny: since earning promotion at the end of 2025 under coach Iván Delfino, Estudiantes has managed just one win in 13 Primera División matches, collecting 10 losses, two draws and 19 goals conceded against only four scored. Delfino was replaced in March by Gerardo Acuña, with no improvement in results.
Estudiantes, which competes in Argentina’s Primera Nacional, is scheduled to face Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata on April 18, as it looks to move past the controversy both on and off the pitch.
Former Boca Juniors striker Ramón “Wanchope” Ábila is among the suspended players
