The university hopes this will encourage overseas students to apply and promote international exchange

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) has donated HK$203m (US$25.9m) to The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to build a new campus for undergraduates.

Named the Jockey Club i-Village, the campus will house over 1,500 students and is expected to encourage overseas students to study at the university.

The donation was made through the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

Lester Huang, HKJC Deputy Chairman, said: “This purpose-built facility is the realisation of a vision six years in-the-making, brought to life through the collaboration of the HKSAR Government, The Trust and HKUST.

“Collectively we aim to empower young people to pursue their passions and, in doing so, nurture leaders who can propel Hong Kong’s economic development and sustain the prosperity of our nation.”

He noted that this is the fourth residential project the HKJC has partially funded, but the largest so far.

He also emphasised that the Club is honoured to have supported many groundbreaking initiatives at HKUST over the years, reflecting the Club’s long-term commitment and investment in people and education.

The campus includes four residential blocks, each housing co-working spaces, Zen gardens, fitness rooms and a communal room.

The campus will be open for first-year students and the local authorities also hope that it will ease congestion in the Sai Kung and Tseung Kwan O districts.

Over the past four decades, the HKJC Charities Trust has funded more than 40 projects at the HKUST, including five JC STEM Labs dedicated to advancing scientific research and nurturing talent in fields such as artificial intelligence, regenerative medicine, sustainable energy and computational genomics.

Elsewhere in the city, the HKJC launched its “Journey of the Horse: A Legacy of Arts and Culture” Light Show at the Hong Kong Space Museum.

The programme is part of the Hong Kong ICH Month 2026 The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series, solely sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

The Club has hosted several events this year as part of its year-long celebration for the Year of the Horse.

These include carnivals, themed tours and mobile classrooms, with each activity focused on connecting people with Chinese culture.

Outside of Hong Kong, the HKJC has also committed to helping schools in Cambodia by offering teachers and students coding lessons.

Good to know

In addition to Hong Kong ICH Month, the Club supports three local traditional events on the national heritage list: the Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade, the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance and the Cheung Chau Jiao Festival
