The Kansspelcommissie, or the Belgian Gaming Commission, has put additional measures in place for the public during the World Cup.
Individuals who visit the Gaming Commission’s website will be greeted immediately with a pop-up that asks: “Are you planning to bet during the World Cup?”
The pop-up continues to explain that players should always choose to play through safe and legal websites, and a list of all licensed entities can be found on the regulator’s website.
A hyperlink can take players immediately to the list, to help with accessibility and channelisation efforts.
There is also a link to Always Play Legally, a website launched by the Gaming Commission where people can check the lists of legal and illegal websites operating in Belgium.
There are also educational videos to help with player protection.
The pop-up also dictates: “Bet solely for fun and stay in control of your bets.”
Finally, there is a third hyperlink, this time to a responsible gambling website that offers information, advice and assistance in managing gambling behaviours.
The ‘Stop on Time!’ website contains self-assessments for problematic gambling behaviour, Q&As, signposting to the Gok Hulp site that offers information and support, as well as access to the gambling ban register.
Many countries around the world expected a surge in gambling activity during the World Cup, and some companies are already being investigated for breaching advertising rules during the games.
Although it seems like a small gesture, it is also very fitting for a gambling regulator to take extra steps during a period such as this.
Belgium will face the US later on today to fight for their place in the World Cup quarter-finals
