Czech gambling sector body IPRH calls for continued assessment of similar platforms under existing gambling laws

The Czech Ministry of Finance has placed prediction market platform Polymarket on its list of unauthorised internet games, requiring internet service providers to block access to the platform within 15 days.

The move marks the latest regulatory action against Polymarket in Europe, with a growing number of jurisdictions restricting access to prediction markets over concerns surrounding their classification under existing gambling laws.

Similar measures have been introduced in countries including Italy, Germany, Belgium, Romania, Switzerland, Poland, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Spain and Ukraine.

The Czech gambling sector representative body, the Institute for Gambling Regulation (IPRH), also highlighted that Polymarket is not the only platform of its kind operating internationally. It suggested that authorities should continue assessing whether similar platforms meet the legal definition of unauthorised gambling under Czech law.

Meanwhile, in Romania, ONJN President Soare Vlad-Cristian announced on social media that Polymarket had once again requested the suspension of a decision issued by the regulator restricting the platform’s operations in the country.

Romania added Polymarket to its blacklist in October 2025, prohibiting the platform from operating in the country. The decision was later upheld by the courts in April 2026.

Soare confirmed that Polymarket had since submitted a new request to suspend the ONJN Supervisory Committee’s order. The latest request was rejected, this time not on procedural grounds but because the court found the application to be without merit.

This comes as Gibraltar’s Minister for Justice, Trade and Industry, Nigel Feetham, announced that the jurisdiction has formally introduced a new regulatory framework for prediction markets.

Described by Feetham as a “world first,” Gibraltar’s new regulations establish the first dedicated legal framework for prediction markets outside the US. The framework focuses on market integrity, innovation and consumer protection, with the aim of supporting the sector’s development.

Good to know

Polymarket recently secured Bundesliga branding rights for the US prediction market sector and also holds partnerships with Italian club Lazio and Serie A League
