Myanmar authorities have arrested 90 Chinese nationals in a large-scale operation targeting alleged online scam and gambling activities in Shan State (North), according to reports by The Global New Light of Myanmar.
The arrests followed a tip-off that led a combined task force to investigate makeshift compounds located roughly 50 to 55 kilometres southwest of Metman Township near the Thanlwin River. During the operation, officials discovered a network of residential tents, dining halls and storage facilities believed to have been used to support online gambling operations.
Authorities seized extensive equipment from the site, including 40 all-in-one computers, seven laptops, multiple generators, Wi-Fi devices and eight Starlink satellite internet units. Solar panels, dynamos, power stations and other electrical infrastructure were also confiscated. Investigators said the camp had been operating with a high level of logistical organization, including medical storage units, kitchens, dormitories and dedicated generator sheds.
In a follow-up search the next morning, officers located additional groups of Chinese nationals who had fled from the main compound. They arrested four separate groups totaling 75 individuals, followed later in the day by another 15 suspects, bringing the total to 90 detainees.
Further inspections uncovered more dormitory-style structures, rice storage facilities, fuel containers and communication equipment, suggesting the site was equipped for sustained operations.
Authorities stated that all confiscated items will be processed according to legal procedures. Those arrested are expected to face charges related to illegal online gambling and scam activities as investigations continue.
Those detained are expected to face legal action under Myanmar law, while seized items will be handled in accordance with official procedures
