Authorities in Myanmar have detained more than 1,000 foreign nationals in an expanding operation targeting online gambling and telecom fraud activities in Kayin State, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Information.
These latest detentions follow an intensified sweep carried out across Myawaddy and the Shwe Kokko area, which has been a focal point of cross-border criminal activity.
Officials confirmed that 265 foreign suspects were initially detained after illegally entering Myanmar through routes linked to Thailand and other neighbouring states. Of these, 200 were verified on 19 November. A further 405 undocumented foreigners were apprehended the following day, with verification completed for another 200 individuals.
The total number of suspects uncovered in recent operations has now reached 1,016.
The Ministry stated that all 1,016 suspects are being held at the Lonhtinwun building in Shwe Kokkomyaing Village, where personal data collection is under way to expedite their return to their respective jurisdictions.
Kayin State Security and Border Affairs Minister Colonel Min Thu Kyaw, together with Tatmadaw and Border Guard Force officials, inspected a series of buildings used to facilitate telecom fraud and gambling schemes.
The inspection covered 22 structures, including low-rise facilities and high-rise towers of up to 14 storeys. Authorities seized 2,653 computers and monitors and 21,750 mobile phones from the premises.
The Ministry also reported that broader nationwide efforts have resulted in the detention of 11,856 undocumented foreign nationals between 30 January and 16 November 2025. Of these, 11,440 individuals have already been verified.
A total of 9,978 have been handed over to relevant countries through coordination with Thailand, while Myanmar is preparing to transfer the remaining 1,878 once the verification process is completed.
The government reiterated that the elimination of online gambling and telecom fraud remains a national priority, supported through cooperation with regional partners.
Verification is required before Myanmar can formally repatriate foreign nationals to their home countries
