A process of supervision has begun in Sweden, with all land-based gaming venues registered with Spelinspektionen after 1 July 2023 to be inspected by the national gambling regulator.
Before that date, each gaming venue was required to hold its own licence, but a rule change meant that if the owner was a licence-holder, it would be sufficient for them to register the venue with Spelinspektionen.
This streamlined the process of opening new commercial casinos, but now the Swedish Gambling Authority will make sure that each of these are working on the basis of a valid serving permit.
It has also stated that: "Good order must prevail on the playing field."
Nine Swedish licence holders are mentioned in the regulator's statement as being involved in the supervision - Svenska Spel is listed among them as an operator that has opened and registered a new venue since Summer 2023.
Results of the supervision will be published at its conclusion, though Spelinspektionen has given no clue as to how long the process may take.
It has also clarified that where the review results in some kind of intervention, this will also be made public.
Supervisions are currently being carried out in a number of areas by the Swedish regulator. Licence-holder Polarlotto, for instance, is being monitored to see if it is adhering to the Swedish Gambling Act's legislation on telephone sales.
Svenska Spel was already been placed under a period of supervision this November to review all of its land-based venues
