Fifty workers dismissed from the Esquel casino in Chubut Province remain without wages or severance nearly two months after the venue ceased operations, as a judicial injunction filed on their behalf awaits resolution.
According to local reports, the situation has seen little progress since the layoffs were announced, with no updates regarding payment of March salaries or severance for the 50 former employees.
Mario Muñoz, spokesperson for the group, said operator Trewelyn has not communicated directly with the workers beyond formal notifications sent through legal channels. He added that the labor dispute is now before the courts, with the group expecting a ruling in the coming days regarding unpaid wages and the company’s proposal to pay only 50% of severance compensation.
He said: “We are waiting on the justice system’s timeline, which is not the same as ours. We hope the process speeds up so we can get what we are owed.”
Chubut’s Labor Secretariat has been providing financial assistance to the former employees, a measure expected to continue until the dispute is resolved. Workers have also remained in contact with Esquel Mayor Matías Taccetta, although no concrete developments have emerged from those discussions.
The dismissed employees have continued their day-and-night vigil outside the casino building, enduring cold temperatures and difficult conditions. Muñoz also thanked local residents and former customers who have stopped by to show support.
Rumors about a possible casino opening at the upcoming Carao hotel have circulated locally, though workers said their current focus remains solely on recovering unpaid salaries and compensation.
Casino Trewelyn operated in Esquel for more than two decades before ceasing activities earlier this year
