Gambling-related counseling cases in Macau continued to climb during the first five months of 2026, highlighting growing concerns about financial distress and youth exposure to gambling activities.

According to data released by the Sheng Kung Hui 24-hour gambling counseling hotline and online counseling service, 1,254 cases were recorded between January and May this year, representing a 17% increase from the same period in 2025. As reported by local media, individuals aged 35 and below accounted for 31% of all cases handled during the period.

The organization previously received 2,567 gambling counseling cases in 2025. Among those cases, people aged between 25 and 39 represented around 60% of the total, while those aged 24 and below accounted for 7%. The group noted that the relatively small number of reported youth cases may not fully reflect the extent of the problem, as many cases likely remain hidden.

Data from the government’s gambling disorder registration system also revealed that the youngest recorded case in the past five years involved a 15-year-old, indicating exposure to gambling before reaching adulthood. Between 2021 and 2025, the central registry documented 706 cases, while the counseling service handled 440 new cases, averaging roughly 90 annually.

Financial hardship remains a major issue among those seeking help. More than 70% of cases involved debt, with the most common debt range falling between MOP100,000 and MOP250,000. Counselors also reported a notable number of cases involving debts exceeding MOP1 million.

The service observed a shift in gambling motivations over recent years. While gambling was once primarily associated with leisure and entertainment, many individuals now report gambling in an attempt to solve financial difficulties. Counselors warned that this mindset often fuels repeated gambling behavior despite mounting losses.

The organization also expressed concern about adolescents' vulnerability to gambling-related influences. It noted that many problem gamblers were first introduced to betting activities during their school years through social settings, ranging from mahjong games and sports wagering to newer forms of casino-style gambling. Counselors urged greater awareness and early intervention to prevent long-term social and financial consequences.
