The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) has officially opened the Jockey Club SCENES Building at Tai Tam Scout Centre, marking a significant milestone in its longstanding partnership with The Scout Association of Hong Kong to promote environmental education and sustainable development.
The new facility forms part of a broader enhancement project that also includes the newly constructed Lo Koon Wing Building and the refurbished Bradbury Building. Funded through a donation of nearly HK$100m from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the redevelopment is designed to strengthen the center's ability to deliver nature, environmental and sustainability programs to young people and the wider community.
Built with sustainability at its core, the Jockey Club SCENES Building incorporates solar panels and a range of low-carbon design features that maximize natural daylight, improve energy efficiency and enhance thermal comfort. The project has also achieved a provisional BEAM Plus Gold rating, reflecting its environmentally responsible design and construction.
The upgraded facilities significantly expand the Tai Tam Scout Centre's capabilities. The enhanced center is expected to serve up to 60,000 visitors each year, further reinforcing Hong Kong's role as a regional hub for environmental education and youth leadership development.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, representatives from the Hong Kong SAR Government, The Hong Kong Jockey Club and The Scout Association of Hong Kong highlighted the importance of equipping younger generations with environmental awareness and sustainability knowledge.
HKJC said the project reflects its broader commitment to sustainability through its charitable initiatives. It added that its community contributions are made possible through its integrated business model, in which horse racing and responsible sports wagering generate funding for charitable programs, tax revenue and employment opportunities across Hong Kong.
The Tai Tam Scout Centre is now the first Scout Centre of Excellence for Nature, Environment and Sustainability (SCENES) in Hong Kong and the third in Asia accredited by the World Organisation of the Scout Movement
