The Sports Lottery and Sports Racing General Division of the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation has launched a coordinated campaign to address illegal gambling among youth, amid growing concern over its social impact.
As reported by Star News, the initiative was carried out in collaboration with Gwangmyeong Police Station and Gwangmyeong High School, where all 880 students participated in a school visit education program focused on eradicating youth involvement in illegal gambling.
Officials said the campaign reflects strengthened cooperation between schools, law enforcement and public institutions in tackling what has become an increasingly visible issue. A professional counselor led the session, explaining the definition and types of illegal gambling, real-life cases and associated harms, addiction risks and prevention strategies.
Students were also introduced to the Campaign for Adolescent Gambling Intervention screening tool, enabling them to assess their own risk levels. Guidance was provided on reporting mechanisms, counseling services and available treatment support systems.
Beyond the school setting, organizers held a broader public awareness campaign during a Youth Month event in Gwangmyeong City. The outreach program, conducted across several local venues including the city’s Youth Center and commercial districts, attracted approximately 4,000 participants, including students and residents.
A representative of the Sports Lottery and Sports Racing General Division emphasized that illegal gambling among youth is not simply a matter of curiosity but can jeopardize academic performance, health and long-term prospects.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Sports Forum 21 underscored the need for sustained cooperation among police, schools and local communities, stating that preventive efforts must be continuously expanded to effectively address the issue.
